Watercolor painting of Louis Armstrong playing a trumpet
2020 · 24" x 19" · Watercolor on Bristol paper

I grew up listening to “oldies” music and I always loved the sound of Louis Armstrong. He had such a unique voice and was such a skilled musician that I couldn’t help but create a portrait in his honor. I had been playing with the idea of using the same technique to create linework as I normally use for my ink paintings, but painting it with watercolors instead to create a brighter, more colorful piece of work. This was my first experiment with this technique and I was not at all disappointed. I love that there is still plenty of contrast, especially with the blue and yellow/orange complementary colors. This piece has inspired me to create more colorful pieces in the future and even revisit some of my previous portraits and see them through a different lens.
